Google: match the SMS to your request
Before looking for a code for Google, identify the account and the action that started the request. Keep these two contexts separate:
- email inboxes
Confirm the mailbox address before using a code for account access.
- account recovery
Start recovery on the official service and keep recovery codes out of public inboxes.
Keep the page that requested the SMS open. Compare the destination number and request time, then enter the matching code on that page. If you start another request, check which action is still waiting for confirmation.
